Description

The creation of truly natural tooth restorations may be considered an &lsquoart form by dental technicians, not forgetting that biological considerations are also important, as without proper consideration for function, periodontal condition or the myriad other factors the most aesthetic of restorations will fail. However, when patients receive their &lsquonew teeth aesthetics will be the primary concern, especially with anterior restorations. In todays world of high fashion &lsquolooking good is what the public pay for.

Many dental ceramists strive to emulate the high standards achieved by the worlds most prominent ceramists. One of the best communicators of dental aesthetics is the photograph, as in the saying a picture is as good as a thousand words.

To sustain the young technician through development, regular inspiration is required, and this may take many forms, including lectures and courses or, as in this case, a book. Techniques for creating natural-looking ceramic restorations through the photographic medium, shown within these pages, will, I hope, be a source of inspiration to all.

The images depicted in this volume represent many actual cases and were part of my everyday practice, made possible only be close involvement with the patient. It is by seeing at first hand the situation in the mouth and being able to influence the result by direct input of design and technical processes from the outset (often prior to preparation) that the optimum aesthetic appeal can be realised.

Phantom cases are also a challenge and a form of inspiration as well as a learning aid. I believe that more challenges to achieve high standards should be in place through examinations and competitions. Going back to the 1980s, the International Society for Dental Ceramics (ISDC), whose president was Dr. John McLean, set criteria for a full arch ceramic demonstration piece which would entitle the applicant to fellowship status in the society if the required standards were met. This provided me with a great impetus to construct such a work piece and in the process I learned a great deal. I believe those wishing to achieve high ideals must accept the challenges to go forward and meet their personal goals.
